Abu Sayyaf member dies in clash By Raffy Jimenez, Correspondent Manila: A leader of a local terror group linked to the Al Qaida was killed in a clash with government security forces in southern Philippines on Tuesday, a military spokesman said in a belated report. Abu Sayyaf "sub-commander" Otong Halipa Linungan, also known as Commander Putol, was slain during a clash between patrolling elements of the Army's 1st Infantry Division and the Abu Sayyaf members at Teggep, in Masola village, at six in the morning, said Armed Forces information chief Lt Col Bartolome Bacarro. No government casualties were reported, Bacarro said. The slain rebel leader has a pending warrant of arrest for alleged kidnapping and illegal detention, which was issued by the Isabela City regional trial court. Linungan had an 80,000 peso (Dh5,333) bounty for his arrest, said Bacarro. Since July 31, hundreds of security forces have launched military offensives in several towns in Jolo, targeting Abu Sayyaf chieftain Khadaffy Janjalani. Intelligence reports said he was in the company of two Indonesian nationals, Omar Patek and Dulmatin, alleged members of the Jemaah Islamiyah. http://www.gulfnews.com/world/Philippines/10062317.html [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] -------------------------- Want to discuss this topic?
