LTTE collecting funds in Canada, says Sri Lanka High Commissioner

"It's very necessary to take action against this."
Aug 27, Colombo: Sri Lanka's High Commissioner in Ottawa, W.J.S.
Karunaratne, says the LTTE is collecting funds in Canada using various front
organizations, despite the ban against them.
Denying that he is spreading 'dirty propaganda' against charitable
fundraising by Canadian Tamils, the High Commissioner told the media, "There
are funds generated through contributions, donations and also money obtained
through extortion.
"It's very necessary to take action against this."
His comments were in response to charges by the head of the Quebec wing of
the Canadian Tamil Congress, Ramani Balendra, that the Sri Lankan government
is engaged in a 'dirty propaganda' campaign against Tamils in Canada in
order to cut the flow of legitimate charity money.
Most Tamils living in Canada do not support terrorism, High Commissioner
Karunaratne emphasized. "But there's a handful of people who are working for
the LTTE and, through various pretexts, collecting money for the purpose of
continuing the war in Sri Lanka. It's a well-known fact," he said.
