A bomb ripped through a bus stop in the city of Diyarbakir, Turkey late Tuesday, killing at least ten people. Seven of the dead were children and at least another 14 people were injured. Diyarbakir has around 1 million inhabitants and is the largest city in the Turkey's mainly <http://service.spiegel.de/cache/international/0,1518,412798,00.html> Kurdish southeast. According to Reuters, local police say they believe the device was set off by mistake and that it may have been intended for police headquarters. While there have been deliberate attacks on civilian targets before in Turkey, it is rare in Kurdish areas. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. The blast, apparently triggered by mobile phone, was heard across the city. "When I looked out I saw a bloodbath," local resident Mahmut Coban told Reuters. "Everyone wanted to help. But there was no sound coming from some of the children whom I saw." Turkey has been hit by a series of attacks in recent weeks which have killed at least 16 people. The separatist group, the Kurdistan Liberation Hawks (TAK), has <http://service.spiegel.de/cache/international/spiegel/0,1518,435494,00.html > said it carried out those attacks . The group, which has threatened to turn Turkey into "hell," is said to have links with the larger Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). While PKK guerrillas mainly attack Turkish soldiers, the more militant TAK has taken to targeting civilians, hitting cities and popular tourist resorts. Tuesday's explosion occurred a day after Turkey's main Kurdish party, the Democratic Society Party (DTP), publicly called on the PKK to declare a ceasefire. Between 1984 and 1999 more than 30,000 people were killed in the conflict between the Turkish army and the PKK, which is pushing for a separate Kurdish homeland. Following a period of relative calm the attacks started up again in 2004. The Kurdish militants are demanding a general amnesty for around 5,000 Kurdish prisoners and the release of their leader Abdullah Ă–calan. Demands the Turkish government has so far rejected. smd/reuters/bbc/ap [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] -------------------------- Want to discuss this topic?
