<http://ad.fr.doubleclick.net/jump/americas.iht.com;cat=index;sz=336x280;ord =123456789?> DEARBORN, Michigan The leader of the Archdiocese of Detroit met Thursday with area Muslim leaders as part of an effort to strengthen Catholic-Islamic relations that were strained by Pope Benedict XVI's remarks linking Islam and violence. Cardinal Adam Maida, leader of nearly 1.3 million Catholics in six counties surrounding Detroit, told reporters that the meeting should not be seen only as a reaction to the pope's remarks earlier this month that angered some in the Islamic world. "It is one more opportunity to affirm our friendship and commitment to dialogue," Maida said. His remarks followed an hour-long meeting at the Islamic Center of America, believed to be the largest mosque in the U.S. It's located in a Detroit suburb that's home to one of the nation's largest concentrations of people with roots in the Middle East. Maida was invited by Imam Hassan Qazwini, religious leader of the Islamic Center, to help strengthen ties between area Catholics and Muslims. It follows a Monday meeting between Benedict and Muslim envoys in Italy. "It is extremely crucial for religious leaders on both sides to continue their efforts in reaching out to each other to mend relations," Qazwini said. Maida and Qazwini described the meeting as positive, focusing on ways Catholics and Muslims can work together rather than dwelling on the pope's remarks. They hope their actions serve as an example for Catholics and Muslims worldwide. "We would like to open a new chapter," Qazwini said. "We would like to strengthen our bonds." The pope's remarks on Islam in a Sept. 12 speech at Regensburg University in Germany set off protests around the Muslim world. In the remarks, he quoted a 14th-century Byzantine emperor as saying: "Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." Benedict has since said Muslims and Christians must overcome historic enmities and together reject violence. And he has expressed regret for offending Muslims, saying his remarks did not reflect his personal views. Benedict has been seen as less interested in promoting close relations with Muslims than his predecessor, John Paul II, whose travels in the Muslim world included a visit to a mosque in Syria. Regardless, Victor Begg, of the Council of Islamic Organizations of Michigan and one of those who met with Maida, said Muslims and Catholics need to remain committed to working together.
