Temporary marriage and Islam

Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khameini offers advice about observing Ramadan
and the practice of temporary marriage.

The Supreme Leader of Iran, Sayyid Ali Khameini, the successor of the
Ayatollah Khomeini, offers advice to mostly Shiite Muslims on a website
offered by the government of Iran. On the website, inquirers can ask about
subjects ranging from the proper observance of the holy month of Ramadan, to
arranging for a "temporary" marriage between a man and a woman.

In some schools of thought in Shiite Islam, a man may engage in a temporary
marriage with a woman that lasts but an hour, or for a longer period if he
prefers that is short of a more permanent arrangement. The woman, in
exchange for the temporary marriage, should receive a "mahr" or dowery,
according to the Sunni tradition. Al Khameini says in a response to an
inquisitive (presumably male) Sunni that "Mahr of a temporary marriage
should either be money/property or something of monetary value llike
teaching (her) a craft or how to read or the like; and just giving her the
reward of reading Qur'an cannot replace that."

In the cases when a man has engaged in several such temporary marriage,
sexual relations between the man and the women involved are not considered
religious crimes ("haram") Khameini says ".if the two partners were ignorant
of contract/s nullity - were not ruled as haram, rather they were ruled as
mistakenly done coitus. If sexual intercourse and penetration have taken
place after those void contract while the wife was not aware of their
nullity, she has the right to claim (mahr al-mithl) - mahr of women with the
same station - from the husband." The mullah also does not object to
marrying two women at the same time who claim descent from Fatima - one of
the wives of Mohammed.

The practice of temporary marriage stems from the time of Mohammed who
allowed it to some of his warriors during the wars that marked his ministry
in the Arabian Peninsula. The practice has been criticized by some Muslim
women's groups, especially among Sunnis.

The mullah Khameini also absolves those Shiite Muslims who worry that should
they not brush their teeth properly during Ramadan and food particles remain
in the teeth during the period of daylight fasting. As for other matters
relating to diet in general, the ayatollah points out that it is permissible
to eat the flesh of an animal slaughtered by a Jew when the Muslim customs
for killing are observed.
