UN reports apparent ceasefire violations in Lebanon

Dec 7, 2006, 19:28 GMT

New York - The United Nations has received reports of illegal arms
smuggling across the Lebanese-Syrian border, but has been unable to
substantiate them, the UN said Thursday in an evaluation of the
4-month-old ceasefire in Lebanon.

The UN report said that in the last month its mission in southern
Lebanon, known as UNIFIL, and Lebanese troops monitoring the ceasefire
were challenged by two Hezbollah soldiers carrying AK47 rifles, who were
then arrested. The UN also found caches of rifles and explosive devices
near Bourhoz.

'The UN continues to receive reports of illegal arms smuggling across
the Lebanese-Syrian border, but have not been able to verify such
reports,' it said.

The UN report said Lebanese authorities have taken measures to prevent
arms smuggling and military activities in southern Lebanon since the
ceasefire was declared on August 14, ending the war between Israel and
Shitte Hezbollah militants in Lebanon.

The ceasefire declared by the UN Security Council under Resolution 1701
also imposed a demilitarized zone in southern Lebanon where troops
movements and weapons are prohibited.

There are now more than 5,000 UNIFIL troops and 8,000 Lebanese troops
monitoring the ceasefire, the report said.

It also said engineering units and demining workers have cleared more
than 60,000 cluster bombs since the ceasefire, but 822 new cluster bomb
sites had been discovered since November 20.

The report said a total of 152 civilians have been hit by the bombs and
17 of them have died.

Israel has so far failed to provide UNIFIL with data on cluster bomb
firing sites to assist demining efforts, the report said.
