Fighting Erupts In Somalia Between Union Of Islamic Courts And
Pro-Government, Ethiopian Troops

(RTTNews) - Somalia's Union of Islamic Courts' militia was involved in
fighting Ethiopian troops and pro-government forces in Dinsor in
southern Somalia, according to reports. The leader of the Union of
Islamic Courts Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed told his supporters in
Mogadishu that fighting had started in Dinsor, south of Somalia. He was
speaking to supporters protesting in the capital against the U.N.
decision to send peacekeeping forces to Somalia. Leaders of Islamic
Courts urged the decision be reversed and warned of attacks on the
force.

Several hundreds of troops of the transitional government, backed by
Ethiopian soldiers, were reported to be grouping near Dinsor after the
Islamic Courts had seized the town on Saturday without encountering any
resistance. Violence set in two days after the U.N. approved plans to
send peacekeepers to Somalia. However, Ethiopia has been consistently
denying reports that its troops are in Somalia to protect the powerless
interim government but has acknowledged the presence of hundreds of
military advisers to train security forces. Sources indicated that
Ethiopian troops had shelled the town of Bandiradley, with witnesses
near Bandiradley confirming the presence of several hundreds of
Ethiopian troops and tanks take up positions near the town. Militiamen
from the northeastern semi-autonomous region of Puntland were also
spotted in the grouping. Sources for the Puntland forces said they were
forced into the fighting with Islamic Courts militiamen after rockets
and mortar shells were fired at them.

Three people have been killed in clashes for the first time on
Wednesday, hours after the U.N. Security Council authorized an
8,000-strong peacekeeping force into Somalia and eased a 14-year-old
arms embargo.
