The Associated Press Published: December 13, 2006 MOSCOW: The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld the terrorism conviction of five Muslim teenagers accused of plotting to disrupt a central Russian city's millennial celebration last year, a local news agency reported. Rights activists and relatives have condemned the court proceedings against the five, saying they were being framed. RIA-Novosti said the high court rejected the defendants' appeal of their conviction by the Supreme Court in the largely Muslim region of Tartarstan, which sentenced them to prison terms ranging from 5 1/2 to six years. Court officials could not be reached immediately for comments. The Federal Security Service the main successor agency to the KGB said earlier it had uncovered an underground extremist group, Islamic Jamaat. Rights activists said the trial was part of a pattern of harassment of pious Muslim believers, in an atmosphere of repression fed by wars in Chechnya against Islamic militants and separatists. They warn the case is increasingly radicalizing young men in Tatarstan, where Muslims make up just over half of the population. "The Supreme Court almost never overturns these kinds of rulings so it's no surprise," defense lawyer Marina Ganiyeva said. She said the defendants would likely appeal to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, France.
