Iran 'stalls' Turkey gas supplies

ANKARA: Iran has still not restored full natural gas exports to Turkey
despite promises to do so, a senior Turkish energy official said yesterday.

Last weekend, Iran suspended gas supplies to Turkey after cold weather
boosted domestic demand. Small quantities of gas began to flow on
Wednesday evening and Turkish officials said Tehran had promised to
restore normal supplies by Thursday.

"There is still no development in the flow of natural gas (from Iran).
We are continuing talks with Iran," the senior official from Botas,
Turkey's state-run pipeline company, said.

"They have said the gas flow will be secured by today at the latest and
we are waiting," the official added.

Turkey's Energy Minister Hilmi Guler said neither Turkish industry nor
households would suffer from the disruption as supplies had been found
from elsewhere, mainly from Russia's Blue Stream pipeline.

Turkey has raised its daily consumption of Russian gas to as much as 37
million cubic metres in recent days from the usual 29m to help cover its
shortfall, officials say.

Iran's daily shipments of 27m cubic metres of gas normally make up
around one third of Turkey's total imports.

Tehran has apologised to Ankara for the disruption, which is not the
first suffered by Turkey this winter.
