Foreign Affairs insists NZer jailed in Lebanon was contacted

Posted at 12:08pm on 06 Jan 2007

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is denying a claim that a New Zealander
jailed in Lebanon has received no contact with consular officials.

David Pemberton, a former soldier, and Australian Brian Corrigan were
arrested last month over the alleged kidnapping of two children in Lebanon.

In an interview with an Australian newspaper, Mr Pemberton is quoted as
saying the British embassy in Beirut had not sent anyone to see him, nor
had the New Zealand government.

However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says Mr Pemberton has been
visited by British officials, at one time for more than six hours. A
spokesperson says Mr Pemberton was also provided with legal
representation through the officials.
