Federal Officials: No Explosives Found In Miami Package

MIAMI -- For the second consecutive day, police reacted to a security scare
at the Port of Miami on Monday.

At first, the Coast Guard said a package that was about to be loaded on to a
cruise ship repeatedly tested positive for plastic explosives.

Now, federal officials say the package did not contain plastic explosives as
initially feared.

A spokesman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Miami said Miami-Dade
County police bomb squad destroyed the box and then checked it. Zach Mann
said the box contained sprinkler parts, so it's not clear why earlier tests
came back positive for C-4.

Earlier, Coast Guard officials said that six tests were run, with each
coming back positive.

Royal Caribbean's Majesty of the Seas, which is scheduled to depart later on
Monday, is docked near the incident. Officials were considering moving it to
another area of the port so that boarding could continue.

Meanwhile, all charges have been dropped against the three Middle Eastern
men who inadvertently touched off a terrorism scare on Sunday at the Port of
Miami.

Federal investigators and a bomb squad were called in over what officials
now say was a miscommunication and a language barrier. Police said a port
security officer became suspicious when their truck approached a checkpoint
and the driver didn't produce the right paperwork.

The three are permanent U.S. residents from Iraq and Lebanon. All are from
Michigan.

Even though the problem was eventually identified, the men were still
detained and charged with resisting an officer without violence.

Court records show a judge has now dismissed all the charges and the men
were freed.
