Sunnis pitch fierce battle in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Fierce fighting was reported Tuesday in Baghdad
between Sunni Muslim insurgents and Iraqi forces backed by U.S. troops and
air assaults.

The fighting flared soon after Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki
announced a new security plan for the city, the BBC reported.

Violence began Saturday when bodies were found dumped in a cemetery. The
area was sealed and joint Iraqi-U.S. teams went door-to-door making 11
arrests, including seven Syrian nationals, an Interior Ministry spokesman
said.

The Iraqi army said nine of its troops and 23 insurgents were killed
Tuesday, while U.S. military sources said between 30 and 50 insurgents had
been killed and wounded, CNN reported.

Northeast of Baghdad, Kuwait's KUNA news agency reported insurgents clashed
with Iraqi and U.S. troops at a mosque in Baquba.

A U.S. Army statement said a mission was staged to arrest a militant cell
leader involved in "abducting and killing Iraqi civilians in the Al-Tahreer
area in Baquba, Diyala's biggest city."

Three militants were killed, the report said.
