IRAQ: NEW SADDAM VIDEO POSTED TO THE INTERNET

Baghad, 9 Jan. (AKI) - A new illicit video of Iraq's former president,
Saddam Hussein, has appeared on the Internet showing him lying on a hospital
trolley after his hanging on 30 December, his neck severely twisted and
bleeding. In the 27-second grainy film clip, Hussein is seen covered by a
sheet, which is then lifted to show his head and neck.

An earlier illicit video of Saddam's last minutes on the gallows, taken with
a mobile phone, possibly by a senior official present at his hanging, was
uploaded to the Web hours later. The film, which also captured taunts and
insults directed at Hussein from within the execution chamber, caused
international outrage and has prompted the Iraqi government to open an
investigation.

The Iraqi government fears the illicit footage will further stoke sectarian
violence in the country and is especially keen to establish how the mobile
phone that shot the video was smuggled into the execution chamber when this
was explicitly forbidden.

The official video of Hussein's execution showed the executioners placing
the noose around his neck and positioning him on the trapdoor but cuts
before the hanging began. He was executed at his former military
intelligence headquarters in Baghdad's highly fortified Green Zone.
