Iran, Syria plan regional conference in Baghdad

Jan 22, 2007, 19:30 GMT

Tehran - Iran and Syria on Monday announced plans for a regional
conference in Baghdad on the political and security situation in Iraq.

Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki and his Syrian counterpart
Walid Muallem proclaimed in a joint press conference in Tehran that the
two states will ask Iraq and its neighbouring states to hold a regional
meeting in Baghdad at foreign minister level.

Iran has rejected US charges of instigating insecurity in Iraq and
insists that Tehran regarded Iraq's security as its own.

Tehran termed the new US security plan involving a 'surge' of new troops
in Iraq as 'another pretext to continue its presence' in the country, and
warned that such a move would just lead to a further deterioration in
security.

Both Iran and Syria consider a complete US withdrawal from Iraq and
transferral of all powers to the Iraqi government as the only viable
resolution to the country's problems.
