Violence Across Palestine Territories With 5 Killed, 24 Abducted (RTTNews) - Hamas' first anniversary celebrations to mark its election victory was dampened with violence that left at least five dead and over 24 abducted in factional fighting across Palestinian territories. Two Hamas supporters, a member of the Fatah-linked al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades and two bystanders were killed in a series of shootings on Friday. The Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, owing allegiance to the Fatah, were holding 24 Hamas supporters in the West Bank city of Nablus, threatening action against them if their demands were not met. The Al-Aqsa Martyrs have demanded that no Fatah official is harmed and Hamas supporters leave the streets of the Gaza strip. The abduction took place following Hamas security forces surrounding the house of a senior Fatah activist who they blame for shooting of a Hamas supporter earlier in Jabalya, in the northern Gaza Strip. The clashes come after Palestine President Mahmoud Abbas indicated a deal could be in place within the next few weeks on the formation of a government. The stalled talks between Hamas and Fatah due to resume on Friday have now been postponed to Sunday at the earliest. The talks have been inconclusive primarily due to Hamas's refusal to recognize Israel, renounce violence and abide by interim peace deals. The formation of a coalition government is vital to Palestine which could likely lift the international boycott. Hamas in the meantime toned down its celebrations to commemorate its victory over Fatah in parliamentary elections last January, shelving plans for a rally in Gaza City. It was shifted to Jabalya, after an attack on Hamas supporters on Thursday night, resulting in a very low turnout. +++ -------------------------- Want to discuss this topic?
