Talk to Syria, Iran … solve Gitmos issue – Al-Khorafi; Jordanian parliament’s conduct upsets Speaker KUWAIT (KUNA): Kuwait Parliament Speaker Jassem Al-Khorafi Thursday underlined importance of dialogue between the US on one hand, and Syria and Iran on the other, while calling for a solution of the US Guantanamo detention facility. Al-Khorafi, in a meeting with visiting speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi here, called on the US to establish dialogue with Syria and Iran, according to a press release by the National Assembly. He said stability would not prevail in the Middle East unless the Palestinian cause was solved on the basis of equality and justice, through which the Palestinian people regain all rights. Al-Khorafi called for finding a “comprehensive solution” to the detainees in the US Guantanamo detention camp in Cuba, because status of the prison was violating human rights and international conventions, said the statement. Pelosi, meanwhile, commended “distinguished and deep-rooted” relations between Washington and Kuwait. She commended the granting of Kuwaiti women their political rights, and said it was a leading step towards enhancement of democracy. Pelosi said she was happy to visit Kuwait, the first country she visits after she assumes her new post. Al-Khorafi and Pelosi also discussed the situations in Iraq, Lebanon and Palestine, said the statement. Al-Khorafi called for peaceful solutions for all disputes in the region. The meeting was attended by deputy National Assembly speaker Dr Mohammad Al-Busairi and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Dr. Mohammad Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah. Meanwhile, National Assembly (Parliament) Speaker Jassim Mohammad Al-Khorafi Friday expressed incomprehension over the Speaker and members of the Jordanian Lower House conduct of mourning the ousted Iraqi president Saddam Hussein after being executed. Al-Khorafi told KUNA today that he was not expressing his personal opinion or the religious aspect of the conduct, yet transforming such act into a parliamentary procedure would politically indicate sympathy for such a tyrant, especially that it took place in a parliament session. Saddam’s execution came after legally condemning him of genocide, crimes against humanity, as the consequences of his “brutal” crimes against the Kuwaiti people were still apparent, he added. Al-Khorafi expressed great disappointment for such acts, particularly after the positive role played by Jordan’s King Abdullah II in mending the Kuwaiti-Jordanian relation, which was strained in the aftermath of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. He pointed that such acts would negatively reflect on the outcome of the recent visit of the Jordanian parliamentary delegation to Kuwait. The Kuwaiti Speaker reaffirmed the Assembly’s keenness on the Kuwaiti-Jordanian relationship, and hoped the Jordanian parliament would have similar attentiveness. +++ -------------------------- Want to discuss this topic?
