Authorities: Leaders of banned Islamic group arrested across Kazakhstan The Associated Press Published: January 26, 2007 ALMATY, Kazakhstan: Kazakhstan's security service has made a series of arrests among suspected leaders of a banned radical Islamic group across the ex-Soviet republic over the past two months, authorities said Friday. The arrests were made in several regions and targeted an unspecified number of national and local leaders and activists from Hizb-ut-Tahrir, National Security Committee said in a statement. Security officers also seized 25,000 extremist leaflets and 700 books, the statement said. It was unclear why the security service was releasing the information Friday; security officials could not be reached for further comment. Hizb-ut-Tahrir, whose Arabic name means Party of Liberation, claims to disavow violence in its quest to create a worldwide Islamic state. The group spread to predominantly Muslim former Soviet republic in Central Asia after the 1991 Soviet collapse and has been banned in Central Asia and Russia. Kazakh authorities outlawed the group, which does not seek official registration and mostly operates underground, two years ago. The Security Committee also said a number of arrested leaders repented and voluntarily handed over banned literature and printing equipment used for producing leaflets. The arrests prompted 55 other members in Almaty and several northern and southern cities to turn themselves in to police and give up membership. Kazakh authorities have in recent years warned that Hizb-ut-Tahrir was stepping up activity and called for stricter security measures. Authorities in neighboring Uzbekistan blame Hizb-ut-Tahrir for attacks in 2005 that killed more than 50 people. The group has denied responsibility. +++ -------------------------- Want to discuss this topic?
