Al Qaeda threat should be taken seriously International terrorist group Al Qaeda's call to strike Venezuelan oil premises should not be dismissed, warned foreign policy expert and former Venezuelan ambassador Julio César Pineda. "This thread should be taken seriously," as for the organization headed by Osama bin Laden "this involves a strategy to advance a asymmetric war," Pineda explained. He explained that beyond Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez' anti-US stance, in Al Qaeda's view, Venezuelan, Mexican and Canadian oil supplies are fueling US troops in different areas, particularly in the Middle East. When the terrorist group threatened Morocco, Pineda reminded, "many people thought Al Qaeda would not strike because this is a Muslim Arab country, but then there was the attack on Casablanca." The same thing happened in Saudi Arabia and "in Indonesia, the country with the largest Muslin population worldwide." Another reason Al Qaeda could have to attack Venezuela is the fact that President Hugo Chávez' government has close ties with the Iranian government -with a Shiite majority. For Al Qaeda, the Shiites have degraded Islam and they deem Shiites their enemies, to the extent that Iran currently persecutes the terrorist organization. Meanwhile, Venezuela and Iran have continued to cement their relations. Pineda reminded that the organization uses state-of-the-art technology and operates in over 50 countries. He stressed, however, that most Arabs living in Venezuela are peaceful people. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] -------------------------- Want to discuss this topic?
