EU says Palestine must recognise Israel for aid BRUSSELS: The European Union yesterday welcomed the prospect of a Fatah-Hamas coalition government but said it must recognise Israel if direct international aid to the Palestinian administration is to be restored. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, on a European tour to build support for an eventual lifting of a crippling international aid embargo, held out hope their new unity government will satisfy the donors' conditions. EU policy chief Javier Solana told Abbas that Europe was as yet unwilling to drop its boycott of the Hamas-led government. "The European Union is not boycotting the Palestinian people," he said in Brussels. Hamas' political leader Khaled Meshaal, however, said his faction will not budge from its position, while claiming some European countries had decided to resume aid to the Palestinian government. "Some European countries ... have been in contact with Palestinian officials," the exiled leader said in Cairo. He declined to specify which countries. Meshaal heads to Moscow on Monday to seek support for ending the crippling embargo when the Palestinian unity government takes office. The foreign ministers of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Turkey, Malaysia, Egypt and Indonesia will meet in Pakistan on Sunday to discuss the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, the Iraq strife and US-Iran tensions, Pakistani foreign ministry officials said. Jordan's King Abdullah said in remarks broadcast yesterday on Israel's Channel 2 television that there was little time left to settle the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and that this may be "the last opportunity for peace". +++ ------------------------ Yahoo!
