Muslim returnees to Srebrenica want to leave again dpa German Press Agency Published: Tuesday March 6, 2007 Sarajevo- Bosnian Muslim returnees to the former eastern Muslim enclave of Srebrenica warned the international community and Bosnia's authorities they would all leave the town if it remained under administrative control of Bosnian Serbs, reports said Tuesday. The chairman of the Initiative Board for Muslims' exodus from Srebrenica, Hakija Meholjic, said Srebrenica, in which Bosnian Serb troops massacred up to 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men in July 1995 after capturing the area should be given a special status. More than 30,000 Bosnian Muslim women, children and elderly were forced to leave their homes after the massacre and only a couple of hundred returned after the war. Most Srebrenica refugees now live in the suburbs of Sarajevo and the northern city of Tuzla. After Bosnia-Herzegovina was administratively divided into two ethnic entities under the Dayton Peace Agreement which brought peace to the country, Srebrenica stayed within the Bosnian Serb entity, the Srpska Republic. The recent ruling of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague which cleared Serbia of genocide but admitted that genocide happened in Srebrenica by the Bosnian Serb troops, made Bosnian Muslim returnees to that town to demand the town's independence from the Srpska Republic. Srebrenica, according to Meholjic, should be given a new status within Bosnia-Herzegovina's constitution, which would administratively remove the area from the Bosnian Serb entity. Another reason why they want to leave the town, the returnees' representative said, was that Srebrenica remains an underdeveloped town with a dead economy more than 11 years after the war. Srpska Republic Prime Minister Milorad Dodik urged the Muslim returnees to Srebrenica to stay and promised to establish an institute to investigate again the Srebrenica massacre. "The institute would investigate the genocide in Srebrenica and would teach the new generations about that," he said. "We will call on other Bosnia-Herzegovina institutions to join us in this initiative, so that we can form an institution to give some explanations objectively, with full responsibility and in a scientific way," Dodik said. +++ ------------------------ Yahoo!
