Four Aussies missing after plane crash

Nine Australians were aboard the flight that crashed and burst into
flames in Indonesia, and four remain missing, Foreign Minister Alexander
Downer says.

"There were nine Australians on the aircraft. Most of them were on the
way to Yogyakarta as part of the visit of the Attorney-General (Philip
Ruddock) and I," he told reporters in Jakarta.

"We are still endeavouring to establish more information about those
(missing) four.

"The other five are injured."

He said he would visit the city of Yogyakarta, where the accident
happened, to visit Australian survivors this afternoon.

"I will visit the Australians in hospital and also have a look at the
site of the accident," Downer said.

He said the incident was deeply upsetting.

"Obviously (my) compassion goes out to those who have been affected
directly or indirectly by this terrible accident," Downer said.

"At this stage, of course, Indonesian authorities haven't given final
confirmation of the overall situation.

"This is clearly a truly tragic accident. We are very sad and feel a
great deal of compassion for those affected."

A Fairfax journalist was among Australians who survived the fiery crash.

Sydney Morning Herald journalist Cynthia Banham was among a group of
Australian journalists and Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT) staff
taking part in a tour of Indonesia by Mr Downer.

Diplomatic and media sources told Macquarie Radio earlier today that at
least one Australian embassy staff member from Jakarta was missing.

It was believed two Australian Federal Police officers assigned to
protect Mr Downer were also on the flight from Jakarta.

At least five Australian journalists were travelling on the plane, as
well as Indonesian camera crews hired by Australian TV networks.

At least one Australian journalist was understood to have been taken to
hospital with serious injuries, while another was missing.

Fairfax confirmed Ms Banham, its defence reporter, was injured and
receiving treatment in hospital. Sky News reported that she suffered burns.

Fairfax colleague, Indonesian correspondent Mark Forbes, who was not on
the plane, was comforting Ms Banham in hospital.

Ms Banham's mother Laurie Banham said that she had been unable to
confirm details of her daughter's injuries.

"I don't know how she is, I can't confirm anything at the moment," she
told AAP.

A Fairfax spokesman said contact had not been established with
Australian Financial Review journalist Morgan Mellish, but it was not
certain he was travelling on that plane.

"Some chopping and changing had been made with the flight arrangements
before hand," the spokesman said.

A Seven Network spokeswoman said it had employed a freelance Indonesian
cameraman, who was also injured in the crash.

The spokeswoman said she did not know the man's name, which was reported
by Sky News as Wayne Sukarda.

SBS denied media reports that it had journalists on board the aircraft.

The Nine Network and Network Ten said they had no staff on the plane,
while News Limited said it did not believe it had any journalists on board.
