U.S. hits chemical destruction milestone

WASHINGTON, March 6 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army Chemical Materials Agency
reached a milestone with its destruction of half its stockpile of
chemical munitions.

The CMA is tasked with safely eliminating the U.S. supply of chemical
munitions and has pursued that goal since 1990. This milestone accounts
for 1.7 million munitions from the original stockpile, Army News Service
reported on Tuesday.

"With our teams working across the country, we are able to move forward,
knowing that we will reach 100 percent destruction in a safe and
environmentally sound way. We remain dedicated to eliminating the
national stockpile while protecting our communities," said CMA Director
Michael Parker.

The current U.S. chemical stockpile includes weapons produced from World
War I through 1973 when the United States built up the cache as a
deterrent. The most common agents the Army made were the mustard blister
agent and two nerve agents, sarin and VX. These chemical compounds are
stored as liquids, although they are often employed as weapons in a
gaseous form.

"We've overcome many obstacles to reach this 50 percent milestone and
are on the downhill slope, moving closer to the overall goal of getting
rid of all of the chemical weapons in the U.S. stockpile," said Kevin
Flamm, CMA program manager for elimination of chemical weapons.

The U.S. Army began researching ways to safely destroy the weapons in
the early 1970s, and the current effort to eliminate the stockpile began
in earnest with legislation passed by Congress in 1986, Army News
Service reported.
