RI, Saudi join to promote moderate Islam

M. Taufiqurrahman, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta

The governments of Indonesia and Saudi Arabia have agreed to cooperate
in the promotion of moderate strands in Islamic teachings, a key element
in combating terrorism.

Saudi Arabian Minister for Islamic Affairs, Endowment, Dawa and Guidance
Sheikh Saleh bin Abdul Aziz bin al Al-Sheikh said Tuesday that his
government would offer assistance in the promotion of benevolent strands
of Islamic teachings.

"In the field of education, we will help the dissemination of moderate
thinking in Islam which is far from extremism," Al-Sheikh told a media
conference after a meeting with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

Al-Sheikh was in the country for two days to hold talks with Indonesian
leaders and other government officials to boost relations between the
two countries.

He was scheduled to meet House of Representatives Speaker Agung Laksono
and leaders of Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah, the country's largest
and second largest Muslim organizations.

He said that the promotion of moderate teachings in Islam would be of
great significance to dispel the extremism that had been associated with
Islam.

Religious Affairs Minister Maftuh Basyuni said that officials from the
two countries were still working on the details of the plan.

Later, in a meeting with Vice President Jusuf Kalla, Al-Sheikh
reiterated his government's stance on terrorism.

"We will make an agreement on how to combat terrorism," Al-Sheikh was
quoted by Maftuh as saying.

The meeting also discussed the managing of wakaf (trust) funds in a way
that benefited the public.

In the meeting with Yudhoyono, the Indonesian government also expressed
its gratitude for the assistance given by the Saudi Arabian government
when thousands of haj pilgrims from Indonesia suffered from food
shortages earlier this year.

In January, during the peak of the haj ritual of wukuf, thousands of haj
pilgrims suffered from food shortages when a local catering company
failed to deliver meals in time.

A probe into the fiasco revealed that Ana for Development, a Saudi
Arabian-based catering company was not experienced in providing meals
for a large number of clients.

Meanwhile, the secretary general of the religious affairs ministry,
Bahrul Hayat, said that although the governments of the two countries
had not yet agreed on concrete measures to combat terrorism, both had
agreed to share their experience in interfaith dialogs.

"We will also discuss ways to expand religious tolerance to curb
terrorism," Bahrul told reporters. (01)
