Lebanese ex-prime minister sheds light on situation in Arab region

Amman, March 6 (Petra) Former Lebanese prime minister Salim al-Hus
described the Arab situation as fragmented, suffering from backwardness
and fraught with crises. In his lecture entitled “ The Arab Political
Map from a Lebanese Perspective”, hosted by the World Affairs Council at
the Royal Cultural Center on Tuesday, Hus said this Arab disintegration
is clearly manifested in real situation of the Arab League which has
become incapable of regulating relations between Arab countries and has
fallen short of contributing effectively to settle problems facing the
several Arab countries such as the crises in Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq,
Somalia and Sudan. The situation in Lebanon with all its problems and
disputes reflects the situation in the entire Arab region, which is
fraught with disparities border disputes, clashes of interests and many
others, he added. Reform requires a political class, which does not
exist in many Arab countries because of the poor political life or the
lack of this political life under autocratic regimes. The Arabs can
never have an influence in this age of globalization as long as they are
divided into weak entities, he said noting that establishing an Arab
union requires major democratic reform plans in all Arab countries in
addition to economic and social reform programs that could enhance
homogeneity amongst Arab countries. Petra/Injadat dat
