Al-Qaeda threatens to kill hostages
Tue, 08 May 2007 19:20:45
An Al-Qaeda affiliated organization in Iraq has threatened to kill the nine
abducted Iraqi officers in 72 hours unless their demands are met.
The demand has been made on a video tape released on Tuesday.
"We give al-Maliki's government 72 hours to respond to our demands," a voice
said over the video, without clarifying when the 72 hours began.
The five army officers and four policemen were shown on the video tape with
their hands bound. The insurgent group claimed in a statement put out a day
earlier that it had abducted the nine in Diyala province, north of Baghdad.
A statement in the video said the group was demanding the release of a woman
from prison and the handover of the ones responsible for the alleged sexual
assault on an Iraqi woman and murder of a man in Tal Afar.
It is the second time Iraqi officials are kidnapped in relation to the case.
On April 19, the same group issued a video showing the execution of 20 Iraqi
soldiers and policemen who it claimed to have kidnapped in retaliation to
the case.
The authenticity of the video, posted on a Web site where the group often
releases messages, could not be independently confirmed.
