<http://www.peres-fondateurs.com/~freedom/?p=327> Truth and the MSM - Open Letter to CNN and the New York Times [This past Friday the 18th, an Israeli friend of mine sent the following letter to CNN and New York Times, following days of fierce Kassam rockets bombardment into the Israeli city of Sderot. Sderot was never in dispute as being inside Israel's Green Line, which makes no difference to Hamas (who never made a secret of of its aims to destroy the Zionist Entity. There is, since last summer, absslutely no Jewish presence in Gaza where the Kassams come from] This is a plea for fair and honest reporting. Again and again, with shocking disregard for the truth, the various media outlets are reporting headlines like: "Israel launches new strikes against Hamas" (CNN) "Israel launched another round of airstrikes against a militant target in Gaza early Friday - a day after the Israeli military began targeting Hamas in retaliation for dozens of Qassam rockets fired from Gaza into Israel over the last five days, the Israel Defense Forces said." Yes, buried in the body of the report is the word "retaliation" but that's not what the headlines says, and then that is diluted by the end of the sentence "Israel Defense Forces said". Why not say "Israel attacked by Palestinian rockets from Gaza"? Why not say: "Palestinians fire dozens of Qassam rockets on Israeli town of Sderot"? For two days you have reported the story the other way around. Even more disingenuous is the NYTimes report. The NYTimes carried the headline this way: " <http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/18/world/middleeast/18mideast.html?_r=1&th&e mc=th&oref=slogin> 8 Israeli Airstrikes in Gaza Kill at Least 7" By STEVEN ERLANGER " Israeli aircraft continued to take aim at Hamas - its military wing and members of a Hamas-dominated police unit." And the lead sentence serves to reinforce the idea that Israel had independently and without provocation launched an attack on Gaza. If that were not enough, this was then re-emphasized by a photo carrying the caption : "Palestinians fled Thursday after an Israeli airstrike in Gaza. The attack was among eight by Israel Thursday and Friday that killed at least seven Palestinians and were aimed at the Hamas military wing and a Hamas-dominated police unit. Factional strife killed five other Palestinians." One had to wait until the second paragraph to read of any wrongdoing on the part of the Palestinians (and even here it was muted and inaccurate): "Some 14 rockets fired by Hamas militants in Gaza on Thursday landed in Israel, 6 of them near Sderot, a border town, the Israeli Army said. The government bused some Sderot residents to hotels in what it called a respite." Is this the Times' idea of reporting the truth? You KNOW that over 90 Kassam rockets have been launched into Israel since Tuesday. How COULD you deceive like this? Now I'm sure you have the military press releases from Israel (see below for example). I'm sure you know that 1000's of beleaguered citizens of the town of Sderot in Israel have been temporarily taken out of harm's way for an extended weekend in vacation villages throughout Israel. Children are frightened from the barrage of shells sent by Palestinians. The noise alone (30 Kassam rockets in the past 24 hours) has caused people to go into shock (SHELL shock). And then there are the actual injuries - people have been injured trying to take shelter in bomb shelters and just not making it. Rockets have fallen on homes and on schools and kindergartens and synagogues. The area hospitals are overflowing. Israel is reacting to a serious attack and many media outlets are leading their readers to believe that Israel had attacked innocent Gazans. Rather, Israel is reacting to an attack on her citizens. To not report the full truth is to deceive. I am appalled. Oddly, although Hamas has hurled over 90 Kassams into Israel in the past 24 hours,damaging people and property, the WashingtonPost (on-line) has had not one mention of these attacks in either the Thursday or Friday editions. What could the agenda be that you would not inform your readers about an Israeli town being attacked by Palestinian terrorists? I appeal to you: play fair and honest. 18 May 2007 Rockets from Gaza hit school and synagogue in Sderot (Communicated by the IDF Spokesman) Close to 30 Kassam rockets were launched from the Gaza Strip into Israel in the past 24 hours, two of which hit a school and a synagogue in Sderot. More than 90 Kassam rockets were launched into Israel since Tuesday. Close to 400 rockets were launched since the November ceasefire. The IDF targeted a rocket launching cell immediately after launching rockets into Israel from the northern Gaza Strip, this morning. Additionally, the IDF carried out during the night an aerial attack against a structure near the Karni crossing in the northern Gaza Strip, used as a meeting place and headquarters for Hamas terrorists and from which terrorist activity against Israeli citizens was planned. The targeted structure was suspected of covering a tunnel used by the terror organizations, which continuously plan attacks against the Karni and other crossings. May 17, 2007 Summary of events in the Gaza Strip (Communicated by the IDF Spokesman) Following continuous launchings of rockets into Israel and other terrorist activities executed by Hamas and other terror organizations, the IDF carried out during the day four aerial attacks against terrorists in Gaza City, in the northern Gaza Strip: A Hamas terrorist headquarters A vehicle carrying a Hamas terrorist cell responsible for manufacturing and delivering weaponry A structure used by Hamas terrorists A Palestinian terrorist, immediately after launching rockets into Israel Additionally, the IDF carried out an aerial attack against a rocket launching cell after it fired rockets from the southern Gaza Strip into the western Negev. More than 80 Kassam rockets were launched from the Gaza Strip into Israel over the past three days. The IDF will continue to operate against the terror organizations in order to ensure the security and safety of all the citizens of Israel.
