GÜNCEL - EN ÇOK OKUNAN HABERLER Güncelleme: 16:11 TSÝ 22 Mayýs 2007 Salý ANKARA - Turkey's special envoy for countering terrorism, retired general Edip Baser was removed from office on the order of the Prime Minister, Prime Minister Abdullatif Sener announced Monday. Baser had incurred the ire of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan for comments made to the Turkish press on the weekend, including that he intended to resign in June. Sener said that the former general's comments were discussed in Monday's cabinet meeting. "However, this mechanism will be maintained, and we have decided to appoint another person to this position," he said Rafet Akgunay, a deputy secretary at the Turkish Foreign Ministry has been appointed as Baser's replacement. The position of special envoy on countering terrorism was created last year, with the objective of co-ordinating anti-terrorism activities with the US and Iraq. A statement issued late Monday by the press office of the Prime Minister's office said that this process of co-operation would continue. "Besides ongoing fight against terrorist organization; efforts continue to cut supports as well as prevent activities of terrorist organization abroad both on bilateral dimension with the United States and also on trilateral dimension with Iraq and the United States," the statement said.
