TERRORISM: AL-QAEDA ON MEDITERRANEAN BEACH

Algiers, 8 June (AKI) - Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb - the new name for
the old Salafite Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC) - has launched its
first website since the new terror alliance was formed several months ago.
The organisation, which claimed responsibility for the 11 April bomb attacks
that killed 30 people in Algiers, is taking an increasingly high profile
both in its jihadi activities and in its use of the internet for propaganda.
Much prominence is given to photos of mujahadeen on what the site says is a
Mediterranean beach, giving the impression that the terror formation is
seeking to widen its range of action.

The group released a statement on Thursday in which it claimed
responsibility for no less than 19 attacks carried out in Algeria from the
end of April to 4 June, among them the document specifies - an attack on a
pipeline that carries natural gas to Italy.

Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb which was formed from the ashes of the old
Algerian GSPC and is seeking to give the impression of being a single entity
operating across North Africa.

It is proving particularly active in spreading communiques and videos via
Internet of attacks carried out in Algeria as al-Qaeda in Iraq and
Afganistan have done for some time now.

The creation of a specific site appears to be driven by the sheer mass of
material they are generating and also by its objective of becoming a
reference point not only for terrorists active in Algeria but also a
refernce point for jihadi activities in neighbouring countries such as
Libya, Tunisia. Morocco and Mauritania.

It is no coincidence that the suicide bombers who blew themselves up in
Casablanca in March and April were linked to the al-Qaeda in the Islamic
Maghreb which also is responsible for the training camps in the Sahara, on
the border between Morocco and Mauritaniaor Algeria and Mali - which were
discovered thanks to the input of various terrorists who once arrested
agreed to cooperate with the Moroccan authorities.

There is concern that their attention may be directed farther afield and in
fact one of the photos shown prominently on their site shows muajahdeen on a
Mediterranean beach. In the captions it is highlighted that the fighters are
on a beach that shares a sea with many European countries and shows a dozen
armed militants marching in line alone the coast. As well as other photos of
the "Mediterranean Mujahadeen" the site contines numerous statements, and
audio and vuideo message which show preparations for the attacks in Algiers.

In recent weeks an Algerian newspaper 'al-Shuruq' reported that an al-Qaeda
cell was planning to target Algerian diplomats in European countries. In one
of its latest video messages the leader of the group Abu Musab Abdel Wudud,
threatened all foreigners, tourists or diplomats present in North African
countries saaying they would be potential targets.
