Accountant in court on terrorism charges
A SYDNEY accountant has been accused of funnelling $600,000 to a Sri Lankan
terrorist organisation and meeting with a man wanted over the assassination
of the former Indian prime minister, Rajiv Gandhi.

Arumugam Rajeevan, 41, of Old Toongabbie, appeared in the Melbourne
Magistrates Court yesterday, charged with being a member of a terrorist
organisation and financing and providing assets to a terrorist organisation
between 2002 and May this year.

Prosecutor Mark Dean, SC, told the court Rajeevan was a member of the Tamil
Co- ordinating Committee, an arm of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam,
and had met with the movement's leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran, in October
2003.

He said police had seized photographs of Rajeevan and Prabhakaran - the man
wanted for the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi in 1991 and a Colombo bombing
in the late 1990s that killed more than 90 civilians.

The accountant had also allegedly moved about $600,000 through a bank
account connected to the movement that he was a signatory to, Mr Dean said.

The charges follow the arrest of Aruran Vinayagamoorthy, 32, of Mount
Waverley, and Sivarajah Yathavan, 36, of Vermont South, in May this year.

Rajeevan's lawyer, Sam Norton, said his client would apply for bail next
week. The magistrate remanded Rajeevan in custody until August 23.
