While one of the accused were picked up on Tuesday, the other was arrested on Wednesday. The police, though, are yet to establish the motive of the nabbed persons and whether or not they have any terror links. Interestingly, most ingredients of the seized bombs were similar to the ones used in the 2006 Malegaon blasts. According to the police, the bombs contained shrapnel, nuts and bolts, ball bearings etc. Sources said they could kill at least half-a-dozen people if kept in a crowded place. The accused were seen roaming with the bombs-each of which weighed half a kilogram-for the last two days. The arrested persons were identified as Rajeev Govind Singh (22) and S Badal Roy (36), both residents of Vakola in Santa Cruz (E). A Std VII dropout, Singh is the son of a vegetable vendor, while Roy is an auto driver. Both were involved in drug peddling. Officers of the crime branch did not get into the details of the affiliations of the arrested persons or the source of the bombs. "Things like why they were carrying the bombs, where they manufactured them and who was behind the entire matter would come out during questioning," said Rakesh Maria, joint commissioner of police (crime). Asked why the accused were found with the bombs in a crowded place like Andheri's Agarkar Chowk on an occasion as important as Ganesh visarjan, Maria said the police were investigating the matter and would come to a conclusion only after the two persons were interrogated. Deputy commissioner of police (detection) Deven Bharti said the bombs were made using soda bottle containing shrapnel, nuts and bolts and glass shards mixed with low-intensity local explosives powder, all wrapped in a cloth. Sources said the combination was the same as the one used in the Malegoan blasts that took place on September 8, 2006. The Malegaon explosions had killed 31 people and injured 297 others. Asked whether the explosives were brought to the city to cause disturbance during Ganesh immersions and the holy month of Ramzan, Maria said, "It is too premature to say anything at this juncture." Inspector Samad Shaikh of Unit X of the crime branch said they got information three to four days ago that some people were likely to bring bombs into the city. Based on this, a team caught Singh moving suspiciously with explosives. During interrogation, he revealed Roy's name, who was picked up later. The police called in sniffer dogs of the bomb detection and disposal squad, and the presence of explosives was confirmed. The bombs were later handed over to the BDDS experts for disposal, the police added. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] -------------------------- Want to discuss this topic?
