Indonesia: Achenese receive Red Cross cash for Ramadan Jakarta, 11 Oct. (AKI) Survivors in Aceh from the 2004 southeast Asian tsunami have received allowances from the Australian Red Cross for the Eid ul-Fitr holiday which marks the end of the holy Muslim month of Ramadan.
Eid ul-Fitr marks the end of the fasting month Ramadan, celebrated in Indonesia on Saturday, as part of a national two-day holiday that most people extend to one week. It is common for Indonesians to receive one month's extra salary for the festivities, which for most citizens involve travelling home to spend time with their families. "The Idul Fitri allowances originated from the Australian Red Cross. We only distributed it among tsunami victims," the head of the Banda Aceh post office, Salman, said to Antara, Indonesia national press agency. The victims were given 500,000 Indonesian rupiahs each, slightly less than 50 euros, so they could celebrate the annual holiday like other Muslims. The Australian Red Cross contributed three billion [235,000 Euro] to the cause. Aceh was the epicentre of the massive 26 December 2004 tsunami which killed some 180,000 people there, left many homeless and devastated much of the province. Eid ul-Fitr is particularly important in Aceh, known in Indonesia as the "veranda of Mecca" for the fervour of its inhabitants' religious devotion (photo). Aceh is the only province in Indonesia, allowed to base legislation on the sharia (Islamic law) since it was granted special status in 1999 under the presidency of Abdurrahman Wahid. <http://www.adnkronos.com/AKI/English/Religion/?id=1.0.1414006191 <http://www.adnkronos.com/AKI/English/Religion/?id=1.0.1414006191> > [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] -------------------------- Want to discuss this topic?
