Chaverim v hayeddim Yesterday, Bob Fishman of JFACT in West Hartford had alerted a number of us to the controversy swirling about two church and one public school performance of a Palestinian Dance troupe in shoreline, Connecticut Jim Hutchens, the UCC critic and blogger had asked me by email last night if there were any news stories on the controversial Palestinian Dance Group performances in two shoreline churches in Connecticut-one in Old Lyme at a UCC church - and a second one last night in Clinton, CT at an Episcopal Church-the Church of the Advent. I did a search in the middle of the night and found this link-see below- to a news video of the 'story' broadcast at 11:00PM on WNTH -ABC affiliate in New Haven. Please play it to gain some background and perspective on the controversy. The WNTH news report included interviews with the Minister of the Episcopal Church in Clinton, shots of the Palestinian Dance group in performance with an indication that the dancers were Christians from the Bethlehem district. Interesting, as most Christians have fled the city of the Nativity making it predominately Muslim. Even Bethlehem's Christian Mayor Dr. Victor Bertaseh -a dual U.S. PA citizen and eye surgeon was elected in 2005 on a Hamas ticket! He was a member of the radical Marxist wing of the PLO-the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. I had indicated in my email to many of you that I thought that Pastor Good of the UCC church in Old Lyme was a devotee of the infamous Sabeel Ecumenical Liberation Theology Center in Jerusalem. I think the Episcopal minister from the Church of the Advent in Clinton, Connecticut interviewed by WNTH, in last night's report, unfortunately, is similarly inclined, if not a supporter of the bizarre views of Sabeel, as well. What is most troubling about this WNTH news report stems from my friend back in Connecticut, Bob Fishman's comments. Bob is head of JFACT - the capstone group encompassing the 9 Jewish Federations in the State of Connecticut. Bob and I had worked extensively together on a number of 'special projects', when I was a resident of Fairfield. The two elements in this story that bear close examination are the political preaching in a public school performance of this traveling Palestinian Dance group and as the news story indicates -threats made against those who filed objections to the public program after their children and others viewed it. While Bob is rightfully concerned that there was no opposing view presented, the real matter was how such sinuously crafted anti-Israel and, I suspect, anti-Semitic theme materials wrapped up in music, dramaturgy and dance performances with Christians-a beleaguered minority oppressed by Islamist Imams and thugs in the Bethlehem district- could get into a Connecticut public school. Very slick, as some might say. The other troubling facet of this "dark passage" is that I believe this national tour of the Palestinian Dance Troupe is part of a deliberate attempt by the PA cultural and press ministry in Ramallah to gain empathy among mainstream Americans as part of a well crafted PR campaign in anticipation of the upcoming alleged Annapolis Middle East peace conference to be 'convened' shortly. A peace conference I might add in which Israel is being 'pressured' to split Jerusalem, return 250,000 plus Israeli citizens to the 1949 Armistice line-the so-called "Auschwitz borders"-a term coined by the late revered Israeli Foreign Minister Abba Eban - and pressure for 'return of Arab refugees" who have languished is UNWRA eyesore camps in the Middle East for over six decades. May I suggest to you, that if that occurs it is end of the State of Israel, if that becomes part of any final status agreement between Israel and what's left of the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank. A Palestinian Authority without an elected representation and in grave danger of being overthrown by Hamas terrorists. The other part in Gaza is essentially a Hamas mini-terrorist state allied with Shia Iran and poxy Syria. Churches have every right as independent private religious institutions to put on programs, that reflect the views of leaders and laity. However, mainstream Protestant churches have been in the vanguard of facilitating replacement theology and 'social action' views that are obsessively political correct and in this current instance have served the ends of fostering traditional Islamic anti-Semitism in the guise of blaming the perpetrators-Jews, meaning Israelis. One only has to look at some of the graphic imagery used by Anglican Canon Naim Ateek of the Sabeel Center and Munib Younans, Lutheran Bishop for Jordan and the Holy Land of a figure of a crucified Palestinian surrounded by triple strands of barbed wire as the 'victim'. Another, is one used by a Jewish acolyte of this same contingent, Professor Marc Ellis of Baylor University when he speaks of "his son's nightmare dream of a helicopter attack ship flying out of the shulhan aruk-the holy ark, when it is opened and Torahs are taken out"! Jews and Christian Zionists, whether mainstream or Evangelicals, should rightfully be concerned that this evil is facilitated by what used to be called liberal Protestant denominational leaders. If I hadn't witnessed this first hand at a Lutheran national convention in Orlando, two years ago, and worked with dissidents last year who were active in opposing such views at the Presbyterian Church USA meetings in Birmingham, Alabama, I would not be able to speak with such conviction. When liberal Protestants are led astray by fellow Christians acting as unwitting dupes of Islamist anti-Semites, then I fear for the demise of Western civilization and the Judeo - Christian ethos-so highly prized here in America. In your case, back in Connecticut, this has to become part of a vigorous discussion on local talk radio and in the press with letters and op-eds, and, because a public school was involved in one of the Shoreline performance, with local and state education officials and legislators. Having been involved with Bob Fishman and others in a prior event at a state university campus in 2002, I know that it is a daunting task and struggle to convince 'the sleeping giant"-the Connecticut and American public - that this form of primordial incitement to hate has returned in a different guise with a vengeance. Remember the Islamist adage: "first the Saturday people, then the Sunday people". Sorry to shake you up on this Veteran's Day holiday weekend, but the reality is that we are in a "Long War", as Michael Ferguson retired Army Brigadier General said in a speech at my synagogue here in Pensacola, Florida last night. The Men's Club that I head at B'Nai Israel synagogue has made a tradition for the past 18 years of holding an erev shabbat dinner on November 9th honoring Veterans from all U.S. armed services, both active and former service personnel. We had veterans from U.S. conflicts in the 20th and 21st Centuries, a few Russian Army veterans of the 'great patriotic war" and even Israeli veterans of the Six day and Yom Kippurs wars, including our Rabbi, who served in the Yom Kippur War. We had veterans from WWII, the Korean conflict, Viet Nam like me and others, Gulf Wars I and II. The 'long war' General Ferguson spoke about to the assembly last night was the war against 'Islamofascism' or Poltical Islam that will consume the better part of this century and the lives of my children and grandchildren's generation, long after I have passed from the scene. A war as the General said, that we must persevere in and not lose. The past few days back in Connecticut are skirmishes in the 'long war". They must and will be won. Watch this video and plan on doing everything possible to combat this evil. I will.
