~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hello Gerard,
  <http://www.vetfriends.com/images/mcbday1.jpg> During the American
Revolutionary War, the Continental Marines were formed at the Tun Tavern in
Philadelphia, Pa. on Nov. 10, 1775 by a resolution of the Continental
Congress, marking Nov. 10 as the official birthday of the Marine Corps. The
USMC has served in every American armed conflict going back to the
Revolutionary War, and has attained prominence with its theories and
practice of amphibious warfare.
During the First Barbary War (1801-1805), the Marines' most notable action
of this early period occurred when William Eaton and First Lieutenant
Presley O'Bannon led eight Marines and 300 mercenaries in an effort to
capture Tripoli...This movement at Tripoli has been forever immortalized in
the Marines' Hymn and the Mameluke sword carried by Marine officers.
  <http://www.vetfriends.com/images/marines.jpg> Since that time, many of
our Veteran brothers and sisters have proudly worn the U.S. Marine Corps
uniform, protecting our nation, the American people and our many freedoms
carrying out the - Mission of the Marines guided by honor, courage and
commitment:
*       The seizure or defense of advanced naval bases and other land
operations to support naval campaigns.
*       The development of tactics, technique, and equipment used by
amphibious landing forces.
*       Such other duties as the President may direct.
The USMC Birthday Tradition - Semper Fi
At present, all commemorations include the reading of Marine Corps Order No.
47, along with the Commandant's message to those assembled. Most commands
sponsor a Birthday Ball, complete with a pageant and cake ceremony as
prescribed in the Marine Corps Manual. Traditionally, the first piece of
Birthday cake is presented to the oldest Marine present and the second piece
to the youngest Marine present.
