The Legal Project <http://www.meforum.org/legal-project.php> was founded in
2007 to provide legal aid and research support for authors and analysts who
work on the topics of terrorism, terrorist funding, and radical Islam, and
to defend them from predatory lawsuits designed to intimidate them, censure
their views, and curtail the exercise of free speech. It provides research
support, training, pro-bono and reduced rate counsel, and raises public
awareness about the threat of jihadi “lawfare.”

Our current clients include Rachel Ehrenfeld, Joe Kaufman, and Bruce Tefft.
Ehrenfeld, a writer and director of the American Center for Democracy
<http://www.public-integrity.org/> , wrote that Saudi billionaire Khalid bin
Mahfouz had financial links to Al-Qaeda and Hamas. He sued her in January
2004 in a plaintiff-friendly British court, won by default, and was awarded
£30,000 and an apology.

Kaufman has been sued by Islamist organizations for leading a peaceful
protest against the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) with an intent to
raise public awareness about ICNA’s ties to the financing of Hamas.

Tefft, a counterterrorism analyst who was a consultant for the NYPD, has
been sued as a co-defendant along with the NYPD for workplace harassment
because he sent emails detailing the threat of radical Islamic terrorism to
police officers who voluntarily received them.

Dear Reader:

As we approach the year’s end, I write to solicit your financial support for
the Middle East Forum <http://www.meforum.org/> , the think tank I founded
fourteen years ago and have since headed. MEF’s activities complement and
extend my efforts to explain the Middle East and Islam and to influence the
public debate.

Four strengths distinguish our efforts:

* Positions. We have been right on defining America’s interests, often
ahead of the curve in identifying them. Two positions that stand out are our
focus on fighting radical Islam (rather than terrorism) and convincing the
Palestinians to accept the Jewish state is a permanent fact of life.

* Groundbreaking projects. Each of the Forum’s major initiatives—the
Legal Project, Islamist Watch, Campus Watch, Middle East
Quarterly—identifies a distinct problem and addresses it.

* Reach. The Forum’s three websites attract over 400,000 visitors a
month—by far the highest number for any organization providing Middle
East-focused information.

* Good investment. The Forum is a well-managed, lean, but highly
productive operation; our staff of 18 operates on a budget of under $2
million.

MEF projects are multi-faceted and cover a broad range of issues:

*
Middle East <http://www.meforum.org/meq/> Quarterly, our flagship
publication, is America’s most authoritative journal of Middle Eastern
affairs. It is read and cited by world leaders, scholars, and journalists,
has become the journal for the military to debate key issues, and provides a
forum for moderate Muslims <http://www.meforum.org/article/1703> . It has
also stayed true to its mission of publishing articles by the next
<http://www.meforum.org/article/1059> generation of policymakers in addition
to leading authorities. Its subsidiary website, www.mideastbookreviews.org
<http://www.mideastbookreviews.org/> , is a repository of all book reviews
that have appeared in MEQ and is a resource for academics, policy
practitioners, and the general reader.

*
Campus Watch <http://www.campus-watch.org/> , established in 2002, critiques
the extremist orthodoxy that dominates Middle East studies at North American
universities.

This October, the attempt to curtail free speech on campuses hit
close to home when a professor of political science at the University of
Delaware refused to participate on a panel with Campus Watch associate
fellow Asaf
<http://www.thebulletin.us/site/news.cfm?newsid=18969545&BRD=2737&PAG=461&de
pt_id=576361&rfi=6> Romirowsky because the latter is a former member of the
Israeli Defense Forces, leading to Romirowsky’s exclusion from the panel.

In the past two months, Campus Watch has been attacked in the Nation
<http://www.thenation.com/doc/20071112/cohler-esses> , the Guardian
<http://commentisfree.guardian.co.uk/ghada_karmi/2007/10/intellectual_terror
ism.html> , and by the American
<http://www.aaup.org/AAUP/pubsres/academe/2007/SO/Feat/Coll.htm> Association
of University Professors. It must be doing something right.

*
Islamist Watch <http://www.meforum.org/islamist.php> is a project launched
in 2006 to combat the ideas and institutions of nonviolent, radical Islam in
the United States and other Western countries. It exposes the far-reaching
goals of Islamists, works to reduce their power, and seeks to strengthen
moderate Muslims.

In October, Islamist Watch was responsible for filing the Freedom of
Information Act requests that led to the Article 78 proceeding (filed by the

Court) against the New York City Department of Education after it
established the Khalil Gibran <http://www.danielpipes.org/article/4441>
International Academy (KGIA), a controversial new public school to teach
Arabic history, culture, and language.

The Forum engages in a number of public outreach efforts:

* Staff members are regularly published in the international press and
appear on virtually all the major news programs in the U.S. and throughout
the world.

* Staff members also brief U.S. government officials, testify before
Congress, and conduct studies for the Department of Defense and other
federal agencies.

* The Forum presents a lecture series
<http://www.meforum.org/events.php> in five cities: Boston, Cleveland, Los
Angeles, Philadelphia, and New York. Speakers have included heads of state,
ranking ministers, and leading journalists and scholars, and summaries of
their talks appear on the Forum’s website <http://www.meforum.org/wires.php>
.

For more information on our work, please visit our website, www.MEForum.org

The Forum offers donors a range of benefits
<http://www.meforum.org/participation/participation.php> . For our year-end
donors, we are also offering a special gift: Donations of $150 or more will
receive – upon request – a signed hardback copy of Foxbats
<http://yalepress.yale.edu/YUPBOOKS/book.asp?isbn=9780300123173> over
Dimona: The Soviets’ Nuclear Gamble in the Six-Day War (Yale University
Press, 2007) by Isabella Ginor and Gideon Remez. In my column
<http://www.danielpipes.org/article/4589> , I praised this book – which
argues that the Soviet Union caused the war to break out in 1967 – for
offering a “viable, exciting interpretation for others to chew on, with many
implications.” The MEF is a 501c3 non-profit, making contributions
<https://wwws.meforum.org/participation/> tax deductible in the United
States.

We are deeply grateful for your help. Together, we can promote American
interests in the world’s most dangerous region while helping the United
States defend itself at home.

Yours sincerely,

Daniel Pipes
