Afghanistan: Suicide bombing kills two and injures others Kabul, 27 Nov. (AKI) - At least two people were killed and several wounded after a suicide bomber struck a US military convoy in the Afghan capital on Tuesday. Police said an Afghan civilian and a security guard died in the car bombing near a defence ministry building in central Kabul. According to Arab television network, Al Jazeera, several vehicles, used by foreign soldiers and officials, were also damaged by the blast. Lieutenant Colonel David Johnson, a spokesman for US-led troops, said no American soldiers were injured in the attacks. The Hizb-e Islami, an armed group of Afghan warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar allied to the Taliban, claimed responsibility for the attack. Hekmatyar was one of the chief mujahideen armed men who fought against the 1979-89 Soviet occupation but Hizb-e Islami has carried out few suicide attacks in the past. The Taliban have killed at least 200 civilians in an estimated 140 suicide bombs this year in their campaign to overthrow the pro-Western Afghan government and expel all foreign troops. Violence has surged in Afghanistan this year. Last week the international think-tank, the Senlis Council, said the situation in Afghanistan had reached "crisis proportions" and the Taliban was close to taking control of Kabul. NATO has over 40,000 troops operating in Afghanistan as part of the International Security Assistance Force. The United States and Britain are the largest contributors, with 15,000 and 7,700 soldiers, respectively.
