Hundreds evacuated after Sydney blast A GAS explosion in an inner-Sydney apartment block forced the evacuation of about 1,000 people and hospitalised two early today.

Residents several suburbs away at Mascot, near Sydney Airport, reported hearing the explosion. "About 1,000 residents in residential units above this building have been evacuated as a precaution. They will remain evacuated for several more hours while police investigate the cause of the incident," Fire Brigade Superintendent Ian Krimmer told Fairfax Radio Network. The explosion is believed to have occurred in a takeaway business in a ground floor courtyard of the nine-storey apartment block. "Police arrived to find the building damaged," a police spokeswoman told AAP. "It is believed the building contained a number of offices, a chicken shop and residential apartments. "Two people were injured, one seriously, and both were taken to hospital by ambulance." One resident told media the explosion blew plate glass doors off hinges, and there are fears the building may now be structurally unsound. Police have established a crime scene but are yet to determine the cause of the explosion.
