Laws combating terrorism discussed

LYON, France, Feb. 1 (UPI) -- Top law enforcement officials are meeting at
Interpol in France to discuss laws that might better support efforts to
combat transnational crime and terrorism.

During a two-day symposium ending Saturday, leading legal and academic
experts as well as law enforcement officials will discuss ways to develop
laws and doctrines that better support international police cooperation on
issues of transnational crime and terrorism.

"This conference provides us with a unique opportunity to look at the
philosophy of public international law that underlies international police
cooperation, and to reflect on the still-to-be-written theory of the
international legal principles that drive our efforts to combat
transnational crime and terrorism," Interpol Secretary General Ronald Noble
said in a statement.

"The continuing challenge for Interpol is to strike the right balance
between formal legal rules and the practical needs of police and law
enforcement around the world. There is still much more to do and you can
help us to devise instruments and mechanisms that are at the same time
legally robust and relevant to modern-day police needs," he added.

Officials say issues regarding interstate relations and the powers and
responsibilities of international organizations are at the top of the
meeting's agenda. Additionally topics will include personal data processing,
immunity, refugees and "legal channels open to people who are subjects of
international police investigations," the release said.
