The troops and policemen were abducted after Islamist rebels stormed a checkpoint in Swat, a former tourist region where a two-month-old peace deal between militants and the government is under threat. "Taliban attacked a police station in Kabal area of Swat and kidnapped 11 police and 19 Frontier Corps troops on Tuesday morning," a security official said on condition of anonymity. A spokesman for the militants in Swat, Haji Muslim Khan, confirmed that the Taliban had abducted the officials. "Our men stormed the police station and asked the officials to surrender," he said, adding the officials were later taken to an undisclosed location. Security forces launched a search operation to recover the officials. "Our forces fired mortars and small arms on a small village near Kabal on an intelligence tip-off that militants were hiding there," the official said. A military spokesman said six militants were arrested and two were killed in a search operation in the valley's Matta town. Those apprehended included two close associates of radical pro-Taliban cleric Maulana Fazlullah, the spokesman said. They were believed to be involved in Monday's killings of three officials, he said. In another incident two soldiers were killed and 14 wounded today when militants ambushed a convoy heading to dismantle a checkpoint set up by militants in Kabal town, the military said. Yesterday, Taliban militants shot dead three intelligence officials near Mingora, the main town in Swat, security officials said. "The Taliban intercepted the officials near Mingora town and opened fire after they resisted the militants' attempt to kidnap them," a security official said on condition of anonymity. Militant spokesman Khan confirmed that account, saying: "We had to react in this way in protest against physical torture of our people in government custody." The Pakistan army launched a major offensive in October to clear the area of militants loyal to Fazlullah. The government signed a peace deal with the Swat militants in May and agreed to gradually pull out troops and introduce an Islamic justice system. In exchange, the rebels said they would halt attacks and surrender their arms. But violence has erupted again in the area in recent weeks, adding to US concerns about Islamabad's efforts to negotiate with hardliners based near the Afghan border. . <http://geo.yahoo.com/serv?s=97359714/grpId=11648958/grpspId=1705447214/msgI d=67982/stime=1217373871/nc1=3848627/nc2=3848640/nc3=5191953> [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] ------------------------------------ -------------------------- Want to discuss this topic?
