The police were under the impression that they had neutralised the elite leadership following the arrest of 13 Simi leaders three months ago in Madhya Pradesh. The arrests were the outcome of an extremely well-coordinated intelligence operation spread across several states. The arrests and the subsequent interrogation of the accused were expected to yield valuable insights into the terror network. However, the questioning of the 13 top activists did not yield too many intelligence inputs as the banned outfit functioned like any other terror organisation on a strictlyneed-to-know basis. "We reached a dead end after a while; we would have got at least a hint of the serial blasts if we had made an intelligence breakthrough . These blasts are not organised overnight but carefully planned over an extended period,'' a senior police official stated. But what is baffling them is the timing and motive behind the blasts. The targeting of hospitals in Ahmedabad is the most mysterious aspect of the bombings. "Such acts only alienate the people on whose behalf the terrorists are speaking. So the logic behind bombing hospitals is not clear,'' another official noted. Investigators are once again training their spotlight on members of a certain sect to which many Simi members belong. Officials said several activists of this sect had gone underground fearing detention. But the sect's leaders denied that they had anything to do with the blasts. A security expert said: "Even though the sect, heavily funded by Saudi Arabia, may not have anything to do with the blasts, the fact remains that an overwhelming majority of fundamentalists subscribe to its ideology.'' Farid Batatawala, a Muslim activist , appealed to the Indian Mujahideen not to pretend to champion the cause of Mumbai Muslims . The Indian Mujahideen had in its terror mail mentioned the Wakf land issue in Mumbai.
