'Al Qaeda-Style' Jihad Foiled 4:40pm UK, Wednesday July 30, 2008 A Syrian immigrant has been jailed for seven years after being found guilty of preparing bombs for a terrorist attack. Hassan Tabbakh <http://news.sky.com/sky-news/content/StaticFile/jpg/2008/Jul/Week4/15060647 .jpg> Hassan Tabbakh had bomb-making materials in his Birmingham house Hassan Tabbakh, 38, was found guilty by a jury at Birmingham Crown Court of the single offence of 'preparation of the acts of terrorism' under the Terrorism Act. The former chemistry student, who won asylum in the UK after claiming to have been tortured in his homeland, denied the charges and claimed to have been making fireworks for a religious festival. Yet Prosecutor Max Hill QC told the court that numerous items found in Tabbakh's house showed that he was preparing to wage 'al Qaeda-style' jihad. Police had found three bottles of liquid chemicals used for bomb-making at his home, along with hand-written instructions. Links to footage of attacks on coalition forces were also found on the former university student's computer, while his MP3 player contained a Jihadi song which included the chorus: "This is the meaning of terrorism." After the verdict was returned, it emerged that Tabbakh had been given indefinite leave to remain in the UK in 2005 after a successful request for asylum. He had arrived in Britain in either 1999 or 2000, initially living in Hull before moving to Birmingham.
