**_PRESS RELEASE_*

* **ESISC DEMANDS ANSWERS FROM THE DELEGATE GENERAL FOR THE RIGHTS OF
THE CHILD AND FROM PRESIDENTS OF BELGIAN DEMOCRATIC PARTIES ABOUT THE
INSTRUMENTALIZATION OF CHILDREN DURING THE DEMONSTRATIONS OF SOLIDARITY
WITH GAZA.*

*Claude MONIQUET and Genovefa ETIENNE*, respectively President and Vice
President of *ESISC*, wrote on Monday, January 12, to *Mr. Bernard DE
VOS*, Delegate general for rights of the child of the French community
in Belgium, to *Mr. Elio DI RUPO*, President of PS, to *Mrs. Joëlle
MILQUET*, President of CDH, to *Mr. Didier REYNDERS*, President of MR,
and to *Mrs. Isabelle DURANT and Mr. Jean-Michel JAVAUX* , Presidents of
ECOLO, in order to ask them to take a stance on the instrumentalization
of children during the demonstrations of solidarity with Gaza.

Indeed, on January 11, 2009, an important demonstration of solidarity
with the Palestinian people was held in Brussels. It is, to this day,
one of the major events of this kind held in Europe in recent weeks.

It is also the event where *_the most shocking instrumentalization of
children_* took place:

  - *From the beginning of the demonstration, dozens of children
were gathered at the front of the procession, supervised by adults and
forced to chant slogans they obviously did not understand.*

**- *Some children carried banners and placards featuring
explicit calls to hatred, while others waved flags of terrorist
organizations such as HEZBOLLAH.*

  - *The security service of the event allowed a group of
children to set fire to the Israeli flag and to stomp on it while
shouting “Allahu Akbar.”*

  - *At the end of the event, children were forced to lie on the
ground to perform a macabre “die in” that was supposed to symbolize the
children victims of Gaza.*

ESISC is raising the question of the compatibility of this manipulation
of children with Articles 19 and 29 (paragraphs B and C) of the
International Convention on the Rights of the Child and, more generally,
with the values of a democracy such as Belgium.
