Pakistan: Military convey attacked as Clinton pushes for assault

Islamabad, 19 July (AKI) - Syed Saleem Shahzad - As American US secretary of
state Hillary Clinton pushed for action against the North Waziristan-based
militant on Monday during visit to Pakistan, militants linked with the
country's main Taliban insurgent group carried out an assault on a military
convey, breaking a ceasefire agreement between the militants and the
military, sources told Adnkronos International (AKI).

The attack took place at noon when a military convoy travelling to the North
Waziristan city town of Razmak was passing through a village called
Qalandar. Four soldiers were injured in the attack.

Razmak has a military fort but it is also the global Al-Qaeda headquarters.
Thousands of militants fled to the area following military operations in
South Waziristan.

South of Razmak is the town of Dande-e-Darpa Khail - the base of Haqqani
network, the largest Afghan Taliban group fighting NATO forces in
Afghanistan.

"Pakistan needs to do more against the Haqqani network," Clinton told
Pakistani media in Islamabad on Monday.

However, Pakistan struck a ceasefire deal with Hafiz Gul Bahadur, the
Taliban chief for militants in North Waziristan, therefore refraining from
any operation against the militants in the area.

Taliban insurgents linked with Pakistan's Tehrik-e-Taliban, coming from the
South Waziristan, are known to periodically violate the ceasefire agreement.

Clinton on Sunday arrived in the Islamabad to kick off a south Asian tour
aimed at refining the goals of the nearly 9-year-old war in Afghanistan.

During the two-day visit to Pakistan Clinton aims to bolster bilateral ties
with the country, which is seen as a key player in the US-led campaign
against Al-Qaeda and the Taliban in the region.
