U.S. MILITARY INFILTRATED BY THUMB DRIVE VIRUS U.S. military infiltrated by thumb-drive virus Flash device delivered stolen secrets to Moscow _____ Posted: September 20, 2010 10:33 pm Eastern C 2010 WorldNetDaily http://www.wnd.com/images/misc/100920drives.jpg Thumb drives In yet another sign that the Cold War between Russia and the United States isn't over, Defense Department officials have revealed that Russia's intelligence service was able to compromise classified Pentagon computer networks with the use of a manipulated portable thumb drive, according to a report from Joseph Farah's G2 <http://g2.wnd.com/> Bulletin. The computer flash drive was able to penetrate the classified networks from a U.S. military laptop with a virus known as agent.btz. It was designed to steal secrets and transmit them back to Moscow. What makes this intrusion disturbing is that the Russian service was able to get into a classified network, which often is on the same lines as open-source networks except separated by classified algorithms. Such an intrusion not only gave the Russians sources of information but provided details on the targets of intelligence collection and the methods used to gather that information. Deputy Secretary of Defense William Lynn has confirmed the security breach although he would not officially say it was the Russian intelligence service. However, other Defense Department sources confirmed that it indeed was the Russian service. Lynn confirmed that the origin of the attack was an infected flash drive. "The flash drive's malicious computer code, placed there by a foreign intelligence agency, uploaded itself onto a network run by the U.S. Central Command," Lynn said.
