Khadr's 'rock star' status is absurd Last Updated: October 28, 2010 2:00am Since fun can often be found in absurdity, if not in the pursuit of trivia, what do Justin Bieber and Omar Khadr have in common? The answer is both were burgeoning "rock stars" at the age of 15, and both are Canadian. Ridiculous, yes, but not entirely. In the rent-a-shrink world of courtrooms, the prosecution in the sentencing stage of Omar Khadr's post-guilty pleas to war crimes has hauled out its psychiatrist in Guantanamo, just as the defence will no doubt haul out its own odd-ball shrink to neutralize the damage. In the words of the prosecution's Dr. Michael Welner, however, the now 24-year-old Omar Khadr -- 15 when he tossed the grenade in Afghanistan that killed an American soldier -- is a "dangerous, remorseless, unrepentant Islamic extremist" who has "marinated in the radical jihadism" at Gitmo to the point of becoming a "rock star" in the eyes of his fellow terrorist incarcerates. Why? Because he killed an American. And it can't get any better than that. Unfortunately, there are too many bleeding-heart Canadians, including in the media, who have already given Omar Khadr "rock star" status, and who actually want him brought "home" as if he were nothing more than a misunderstood man-child in need of a hug. But not us. To us, Omar Khadr is a bred-in-the-bone jihadist from a tried-and-true jihadist family who will remain a bred-in-the-bone jihadist no matter how much "deradicalization" therapy is heaped upon his jihadist psyche. We would have preferred it, of course, if Khadr had given the finger to the plea deal of eight years in prison -- seven of which will apparently be served in Canada -- but he knew, like we know, that it would have seen him convicted and sentenced to life in prison. So he is getting off easy. Remember, on the day Omar Khadr threw the grenade that killed U.S. Sgt. Christopher Speer, he himself was grievously wounded. But, instead of leaving him to die, the American medic who could not save his own comrade's life saved the life of Omar Khadr. Khadr has had his second chance. Save the hugs, instead, for Speer's widow and two young children. They alone deserve them.
