It is a tale of two very different Britons.

One is a soldier whose leg was blown off by a Taliban roadside bomb while
serving his country in Afghanistan.

The other is a Muslim fanatic who lives off benefits and was jailed for
inciting terrorism after years of hate-filled preaching.

Yesterday as Gunner Mark Stonelake became the face of the Poppy Appeal,
London-born Abu Izzadeen - whose real name is Trevor Brooks - was freed from
prison and launched a fresh assault on the honour of British soldiers,
calling them ‘murderers’.

Gunner Stonelake, 26, who lost his left leg in December 2008, described the
‘absolute honour’ of appearing on a poster for the charity’s annual appeal
to raise £36million to help his comrades-in-arms.

At a ceremony at Colchester Garrison, he said: ‘The Poppy Appeal is so
important and deserves the support of the whole British public. It is a
chance to pay respect to the men and women who died and fought for freedom.’

But at almost exactly the same time, Izzadeen walked out of Pentonville
Prison in London and leapt on a wall to address a crowd of supporters.

He urged a boycott of the Poppy Appeal, claiming anyone wearing one to mark
Remembrance Day ‘supported the murder of Muslims’.

He said: ‘If you look at how the poppy campaign has gone this year it was
talking a lot about the people who have fought in Afghanistan and Iraq. ‘The
troops are occupying foreign lands.

'That’s what a soldier’s job is – it’s to bomb houses, and to kick doors in.
It’s to rape them, it’s to handcuff them, it’s to rob them.’

Izzadeen, 35, who was born to a respectable Jamaican family, shed his
Christian identity on the eve of his 18th birthday to become a Muslim
firebrand who believes Britain should become an Islamic state.

He spent more than a decade preaching before he was finally jailed in April
2008 for four and half years, reduced by a year on appeal.

The father of three has not worked for years and has lived off the state
that he has plotted to overthrow, receiving £102-a-week Jobseeker’s
Allowance and almost £47 a week in child benefit, as well as housing benefit
and council tax benefit.

Last night there was a growing wave of revulsion and anger from all sides
over Izzadeen’s attack.

Defence Secretary Liam Fox said: ‘The British public should dismiss these
offensive comments and do their bit to remember our brave troops who have
paid the ultimate sacrifice.’

Shadow defence secretary Jim Murphy said: ‘These repulsive statements are an
insult to the heroes, from throughout the years and in Afghanistan today,
whose bravery, courage and patriotism we are remembering, respecting and
celebrating through the Poppy Appeal.’

Tory MP Patrick Mercer, a former Army officer, said: ‘The way that Brooks
has incited hatred against our brave soldiers and scorned the memory of the
many thousands of Muslims who have fought for Britain and the Commonwealth
against tyranny should put him squarely back in prison.’

Muslim Labour MP Khalid Mahmood said: ‘I think he is absolutely disgraceful.
Our soldiers do what they do because they are there to defend our country as
they have always done.’

Izzadeen has long been influential in Islamist groups and movements that
straddle the boundaries of legality.

He was at one time a leading member of an organisation known as The Saviour
Sect, which was formed in 2005 but banned a year later by the British
Government.

He gained most notoriety after he disrupted a meeting between the then Home
Secretary John Reid and moderate Muslims in September 2006.

Humbling courage: New face of the Poppy Appeal relives the moment Taliban
blast blew him 20ft in the air

He has suffered more than most from the conflict in Afghanistan.

But as he poses proudly with his fiancée and their daughter, Mark Stonelake
shows no signs of self-pity or anger.

The new face of the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal, Mark, 26, has only
one leg. His left one was amputated in December 2008 after the vehicle he
was driving struck a roadside bomb in Afghanistan.

Gunner Stonelake, of 29 Commando Regiment, Royal Artillery, also suffered a
catalogue of other horrifying injuries: a badly damaged right foot, a
fractured back, broken bones in his right leg, a broken nose and jaw and
smashed teeth.

His family were told his injuries were so severe that he might not walk
again.

But like the true hero he is, Gunner Stonelake has battled to overcome
terrible adversity.

Yesterday the courageous soldier was at Colchester Garrison, in Essex, to
launch the charity’s record £36million fundraising drive for 2010.

Reliving the day he and his colleagues were blown up in Helmand Province, he
said:

‘We saw a member of the Taliban coming towards our area. We went to point
our weapon in his general direction to ward him off, and we hit the actual
pressure plate.

‘It blew us all up in the air, 20 foot. I lost a leg; the bloke next to me
is brain-damaged for life.’

But against huge odds, Gunner Stonelake is still serving in the Armed
Forces, along with his fiancée Donna Canty, 24, an Able Seaman in the Royal
Navy. They live in Devon with their ten-month-old daughter, Grace.

He has even taken up gliding, learned acrobatics and sailed from his home
town of Plymouth to London to raise money for charity.

He has had to work hard and dig deep into his reserves of determination to
succeed so amazingly but he has battled through his nightmare with the help
of the Legion.

The charity has donated around £14,000 to the family so they can adapt their
home to make it easier for him to carry out essential everyday activities.

Alterations will include building an extension to the house, and to install
an ensuite wet room so Gunner Stonelake, who has a prosthetic limb, can
shower and use the toilet more easily when he is in his wheelchair.

He said: ‘The people at the Legion have been brilliant. The ones in Devon
are helping me while I’m in the Army, but I know that help will continue
should myself or my family need it if I leave the Army.’

Gunner Stonelake starred in the Legion’s first television advert and agreed
to pose for the charity’s national poster campaign.

With the support of his family and friends, coupled with the Legion, he has
made an astonishing recovery.

In April last year, he was catapulted 1,000ft into the air in a glider as
part of the Ministry of Defence’s Battle Back programme, which aims to help
rehabilitate injured servicemen through sport and adventure activities.

Mark also recently took part in the Sail4Heroes fundraiser, sailing from
Sutton Harbour in Plymouth to London’s River Thames to drum up cash.

He said yesterday: ‘It was a great honour to be asked to be appear on the
poster for the Legion and I jumped at the chance. It is a massive honour to
do it for them.

‘The Poppy Appeal is so important and deserves the support of the whole
British public.

‘It is a chance to pay respect to the men and women who died and fought for
freedom. It doesn’t take much effort to pin a poppy on.’

The Legion invited families, children, and personnel of 16 Air Assault
Brigade, currently on combat operations in Afghanistan, to launch its 90th
Poppy Appeal.

The ceremony included a performance by pop group The Saturdays and a
parachute display by the Legion’s extreme flight team, Jump4Heroes.
