Growing instability, Islamist threat in nuclear Pakistan alarms West

Recent violence in Karachi is putting new strains on Pakistan's coalition
government, raising new fears among U.S. and Western intelligence agencies
about an Islamist takeover of the nuclear-armed Southwest Asian state.

Tensions are growing between government coalition partners, the
Pashtun-based Awami National Party (ANP) and the Urdu-speaking Muttahida
Quami Movement (MQM).

The Pakistan People's Party (PPP)-led government is under fire by critics
for its failure to take action and for allegedly protecting "criminals"
engaged in violence in the city.

Some are calling for military intervention in the government to help stem
the violence.

One MQM representative was quoted on Pakistan television as saying the ANP
patronized criminals, while an ANP official accused the MQM of rigging
elections and killing Pashtuns.

The ANP official called for Army intervention to control violence in the
city, and said an Army operation would expose the MQM's "criminal"
activities.

Reports from Pakistan also said MQM officials threaten to pull out of the
government coalition, but delayed the decision after a meeting with
President Asif Ali Zadari.
