Palestinians: Hamas has deployed black ops squad in Gaza GAZA CITY - The Hamas regime has been operating a secret assassination squad in the Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian sources. The sources said Hamas has deployed what they termed a black operations unit meant to eliminate rivals and opponents of the Islamic regime. They said the secret squad contained trained Hamas assassins who wear masks to prevent identification. "Their missions include killings and severe beatings with nobody taking credit and no genuine suspects arrested," a Palestinian source familiar with the squad said. The black squad was said to have been established by Hamas military chief Ahmed Jabari. The sources said the unit, financed by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, was directed by Jabari and his No. 2, Mohammed Deif. The sources said the black ops squad contains up to 50 officers, many of them trained by IRGC. They said some of the officers were believed to have participated in secret IRGC operations against opponents of the Teheran regime over the last three years. The Iranian training was said to include counter-espionage, communications interception and encryption. The Hamas squad was said to target a range of opponents. The sources said many of the targets were members of the Fatah-aligned opposition while others were Hamas officials and officers deemed either disloyal or incompetent. More than a dozen people were said to have been killed this year by the Hamas squad. The sources said many of the targets were shot in the head and their bodies dumped in the Mediterranean Sea. Often, Hamas announced that the victims, sometimes declared martyrs, had drowned. The sources said this included officials at the Interior Ministry and other key departments. "The biggest fear of Hamas is that officials and officers will join the opposition," the source said. "Many officers have already defected, particularly to the Salafist [Al Qaida-linked] militias." The sources said the black squad was directed to conceal high-level penetration of the Hamas regime. They said the squad was part of the Hamas military and connected to the new intelligence service established in 2009. "There is no trial, not even a secret trial, because information might come out," another source said. "A much easier solution is just to torture and kill them." Hamas launched a campaign this year against so-called collaborators for Israel. The Interior Ministry has called on suspects to either surrender or die, while Hamas-financed clerics urged children to report suspicious activities to the authorities. Over the last month, the Education Ministry has arranged for school lectures on how to identify and report collaborators. The sources said the black squad operates without civilian oversight. They said Jabari, who directed recent missile and rocket strikes on Israel, has long stopped consulting with Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh and instead was working secretly with Interior Minister Fathi Hamad. "Haniyeh has been helpless, and his complaints to Damascus have gone unanswered," a source said.
