Operations are reported in the following provinces: Kandahar and Helmand. With operations from only two provinces being reported, there is no lack of activity. 12 insurgents, and multiple Taliban facilitators were arrested/detained. In Zharay district of Kandahar a Taliban leader recently returned from Chaman, Pakistan, in preparation for the spring fighting season was captured. In other International Security Assistance Force Joint (ISAF) Command Operational News throughout Afghanistan: Kandahar Province Afghan National Police, in partnership with International Security Assistance Forces, captured two low-level insurgent leaders Feb. 24, during a joint operation in sub-district 4 of Kandahar City. The two men are suspected of being Taliban facilitators and improvised explosive device fabricators. Acting on intelligence provided by local residents, ANP secured a compound, where they identified and detained. "Capturing these insurgent leaders disrupts the insurgent network in Kandahar City," said U.S. Army Maj. Earl Brown, public affairs officer, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division. "Information seized from these men increases our grip on other Taliban networks targeting government officials and security forces." Also..... Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Forces detained the overall Taliban leader for Zharay District along with numerous suspected insurgents during an operation in Kandahar province yesterday. The leader organized and coordinated Taliban attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in the district. He was actively recruiting replacements for two top Taliban leaders who were detained during recent operations. The leader recently returned from Chaman, Pakistan, in preparation for the spring fighting season. He had strong ties to Taliban leaders in the area to include the Taliban deputy Kandahar District shadow governor. Intelligence reports led the security force to the targeted compound in the district, where Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully before conducting a search. The Taliban leader and numerous suspected insurgents were detained after initial questioning at the scene for involvement in insurgent activity Also..... Combined Afghan and coalition forces operating in Zharay district, conducted a clearing operation today. The operation lead to the detention of 12 insurgents and the recovery of approximately 1000 pounds (453 kilograms) of ammonium nitrate and a large quantity of marijuana. Also..... In Arghandab district, a combined Afghan and coalition forces patrol discovered a weapons cache today. The cache consisted of 21 rocket propelled grenades, two anti personnel mines, one PKM heavy machine gun drum with more than 200 rounds of ammunition, two bags of homemade explosive material and multiple improvised explosive device materials. Helmand Province Afghan and coalition forces targeted an insurgent leader at a compound in Nad'Ali district today. Three men were killed during the operation when they engaged the joint force with AK-47 rifles. The target of the operation has been accused of leading a number of fighters and has been active in the construction and emplacement of improvised explosive devices used to target Afghan security forces and ISAF. Three AK-47 rifles and associated ammunition were discovered during a search of the compound. Also..... In Marjah district, coalition forces discovered a weapons cache while conducting a routine dismounted patrol today. The weapons cache consisted of 26 grenades, one 107mm rocket, nine rocket propelled grenades, one RPG-7 launcher, one rocket launcher and eight AK-47 magazines full. Also..... Afghan and coalition forces discovered 200 pounds (91 kilograms) of hashish, while conducting a clearing operation today. All weapons and drugs have been or will be destroyed by security forces.
