Trump: Obama Beholden to Lobbyists on China

Tuesday, March 1, 2011 01:59 PM

Real estate mogul Donald Trump, who says he is “seriously” considering running
for the Republican presidential nomination, lambasted White House policy toward
China today, saying that President Barack Obama is beholden to lobbyists on the
issue.

“I know the Chinese,” Trump said on Rush Limbaugh’s radio show this afternoon.
“I’ve made a lot of money off the Chinese. I understand the Chinese mind. They
aren’t our friends.”

Chinese businessmen can’t believe how stupid we are and how easily we let them
take our jobs, Trump said, adding, “Through the manipulation of their currency,
they make it almost impossible for our companies to compete.”

That’s because a weak yuan makes Chinese exports cheap in the United States but
makes U.S. exports expensive in China. “China should have a much higher-valued
currency. The government is keeping it seriously, artificially low,” Trump said.

In his own case, when Trump wants to buy an exterior wall for a building, he
said he rarely can buy from an American company because Chinese companies can
make it so much cheaper. “If it’s close, I go American, but it’s almost
impossible for our companies to compete,” Trump said.

“We can’t have jobs if the Chinese are making all our products. They’re taking
advantage of our country. They view us as an enemy, and I don’t even think the
U.S. knows it. And now, they’re starting to build up their military.”

And how does President Obama react? “He gives the president of China a
five-star dinner at the White House,” Trump noted. “Everybody loves what I say
on this,” yet the policy doesn’t change.

And why is that?

“Politicians have been taken over by the lobbyists,” Trump said. “China and
Chinese companies have big lobbyists – OPEC [Organization of Petroleum
Exporting Countries], too. It has to be the lobbyists.”

Our country isn’t respected anymore, he said. “It has the potential to be
great, but it’s not great now. China will take over as the No. 1 economy in 12
years.”

So what would Trump do about it if he were president? “I would tell the Chinese
that, if you don’t straighten out the manipulation of your currency fast, we’ll
tax your products 25 percent. We’d be making our own products immediately.”
