In a cowardly way, Gaddafi outfoxed the coalition by putting his planes and
vehicles near mosques and schools where he knew we wouldn’t fire.

Fox News

ya/?test=latestnews> and MSNBC
<http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/42468330/ns/world_news-mideast/n_africa/> are
reporting that the United States is considering putting boots on the ground
in Libya after Obama promised he would not authorize such a contingency.

It seems that our withdrawal from the coalition in Libya may have led to a
stalemate in the battle on the ground. Turning over control of the No-Fly
zone to NATO is not working out. Army Gen. Carter Ham told the Senate Armed
Services Committee that the situation on the ground is now a stalemate
between the warring factions and Gaddafi has begun to position his planes
and other assets, such as vehicles that had been targets from the air, near
mosques and schools.

Because this is a “humanitarian mission,” killing civilians, especially in
schools and mosques, would do enormous damage to the mission’s raison d’être
and the only possible option may be to put an international force, including
U.S. troops, on the ground to aid the rebels.

Troublesome to myself and many others is our lack of intelligence about what
comprises the rebel coalition. Persistent rumors of al Qaeda involvement
have gone unconfirmed, yet they persist, and if we hand power over to people
who wind up being our enemies tomorrow we’re looking at a similar situation
as we had when we supported the Mujhadeen in Afghanistan. When the Soviets
invaded, we gave bin Laden and the Taliban stinger missiles, some of which
have been used against us in both Iraq and Afghanistan. .

Senator John Cornyn agrees, pointing out that our lack of knowledge of just
who the rebels are is an “intelligence failure,“ and he isn’t pleased that
we are even considering aiding them until we do know who they are and what
they believe.

In addition, we’ve been told that our aircraft were being pulled out of the
coalition, yet General Ham stated otherwise. He told lawmakers that we are
providing some “strike aircraft” that don’t need to go through the approval
process set up to allow our assets to be used—whatever that means (most
likely, such aircraft as F-16 fighters would have to go through some
approval process before they could rejoin the air battle. Specifically, the
AC-130 gunships, which fire ordinance from the side of the aircraft, have
been made available to NATO, Ham confirms.

While Ham explained that the military was considering options, he did
express concerns about our joining such a force. He believes that it could
negatively impact the coalition and make it harder to get Arab support,
which the U.S. views as critical. The turn over and pull out of our assets
was to prevent our being involved in yet a third war in a Muslim nation.

One of the issues the general pointed to is the way Gaddafi is positioning
his air and other military assets in civilian areas, primarily mosques and
schools, where civilian casualties would become far more likely. That makes
it far tougher for the air assault to take out those assets. If civilians
start being killed at the coalition’s hands, which has already occurred in
small numbers, we could find ourselves in another Iraq or Afghanistan.

In layman’s terms, what’s happened is Gaddafi is using human shields inside
mosques and schools and to protect his aircraft to outfox the coalition,
tanks and other vehicles. We have Special Forces (Navy Seals, Rangers, etc)
on the ground in Libya now, as is widely known. Their job is to “paint”
Gaddafi’s planes and tank with lasers. Aircraft above aim their rockets for
the assets that are “lit up.” But now that they’re in populated areas,
painting them is useless.

In addition, both sides in the civil war are at a stalemate. neither is
gaining ground and the only way to break it is for the coalition to to put
boots on the ground.

We will follow this closely and update.
